Certain historical events leave an indelible mark on our hearts. The life of one such companion of the Prophet leaves a lasting impression, despite his very short time in this world.
This is the incident of the young Companion, Tha’labah ibn Abdur Rahman (RadhiAllahu Anhu).
The Character of a Young Companion
Tha’labah (RA) was a sixteen-year-old youth endowed with an exceptionally calm nature, excellent virtues, and a deeply respectful demeanor toward others.
- His Noble Service: His primary duty was to listen to the teachings and messages delivered by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and faithfully convey them to the companions who were absent at the time. He regarded this responsibility as an immense privilege and blessing.
The Accidental Lapse and Severe Guilt
On one occasion in Medina, the Prophet (ﷺ) assigned Tha’labah a task and sent him on an errand.
As Tha’labah (RA) was passing by a house on his way, the curtain hanging over the doorway unexpectedly shifted. Inside, a woman was bathing. Tha’labah’s gaze accidentally fell upon her. He instantly averted his eyes, saying, “I seek refuge in Allah,” and hurried away from the spot.
Despite it being an accident, his heart was instantly consumed by immense grief and remorse, feeling as though he had committed a massive sin. He agonized over it:
“Being a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), how could I commit such a grave mistake? I no longer deserve to look at the Prophet’s noble face.”
He wept bitterly, fearing that Allah might reveal a Quranic verse exposing his action, or that the Prophet (ﷺ) might classify him among the hypocrites (Munafiqeen). Overwhelmed by panic and not knowing what to do, he thought, “If I return home, the Prophet (ﷺ) will surely send his companions to find me, and I will have to face him.” Unable to bear the thought, he walked away from the city, traveling aimlessly into the wilderness. No one knew where Tha’labah had gone.
The Search for the Missing Youth
After every prayer, the Prophet’s (ﷺ) eyes would search for Tha’labah, but he was nowhere to be seen. Noticing his prolonged absence, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked his companions, “Where is Tha’labah?”
The companions replied, “We do not know, O Messenger of Allah! He is young; perhaps he has gone to play with other boys or is resting at home.”
Days rolled into weeks. Eventually, the Prophet (ﷺ) called Umar (RA) and Salman al-Farsi (RA) and instructed them to search Medina thoroughly, find out why he was missing, and see what had happened to him.
Found in the Foothills
The companions searched the entire city of Medina but could not find him. Finally, they reached the foothills of a mountain located between Mecca and Medina. They described Tha’labah’s physical traits to the local shepherds. One of the shepherds responded:
“Are you asking about that boy who does nothing but cry? For the past month, he comes down from this mountain every day at sunset, weeping bitterly. We give him some milk from our sheep, which he drinks, and then he returns to the mountain, still crying. By Allah, we have seen nothing from him except tears.”
Hearing this, Umar (RA) was stunned. They waited until evening for Tha’labah to descend.
When Tha’labah finally arrived, the companions were heartbroken. He was emaciated from constant weeping, visibly ill, and wearing tattered clothes. Spotting Umar (RA) and Salman al-Farsi (RA), Tha’labah tried to flee back toward the mountain, but Umar (RA) intercepted him.
Tha’labah: “What do you want from me?”
Umar (RA): “The Prophet (ﷺ) has sent for you.”
Tha’labah: “Has any verse of the Quran been revealed about me? Or has the Prophet (ﷺ) numbered me among the hypocrites?”
Umar (RA): “We know of no such thing. The Prophet (ﷺ) is deeply worried about you and wishes to see you.”
Tha’labah: “No, I am a sinner unworthy of facing the Prophet. Leave me be; let me stay on this mountain until I die.”
The companions refused, saying, “We cannot leave you in this critical condition.” They gently carried him back to Medina and laid him in his bed, yet Tha’labah’s tears would not stop flowing.
The Prophet’s Visit and Comfort
Umar (RA) rushed to the Prophet (ﷺ) and reported, “O Messenger of Allah, we found Tha’labah at the foothills of the mountains. His health is in a terrible state, and he is now at his home.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) immediately went to visit him. Sensing the Prophet’s arrival, Tha’labah weakly raised his head from the bed. The Prophet (ﷺ) sat close to him and gently placed Tha’labah’s head upon his own lap.
Tha’labah began to weep even harder and pleaded, “O Messenger of Allah! Please take my head off your lap and place it on the ground. The head of a sinner like me does not deserve to rest on your noble lap.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) refused. Tha’labah begged again, “O Messenger of Allah, please place my head on the ground!”
The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him gently, “Tha’labah, what is the matter with you?” Tha’labah replied, “O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a massive sin, and I am terrified of Allah’s punishment. Yet, O Messenger of Allah, I desperately hope for Allah’s mercy.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) reassured him:
“Allah will surely forgive you, even if your sin were as vast as the space between the heavens and the earth.”
The Taste of Death
Shortly after, Tha’labah said, “O Messenger of Allah, I feel as though ants are crawling between my bones and my flesh.” The Prophet (ﷺ) asked in surprise, “Are you truly feeling that, Tha’labah?” He replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Tha’labah, you are experiencing the taste of death.”
Upon hearing this, Tha’labah (RA) recited the Testimony of Faith:
“Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah”
(I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)
With those words, death embraced him. He passed away at a tender age, before fulfilling any worldly desires. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return).
An Escort of Angels
The Prophet (ﷺ) shrouded Tha’labah with his own hands and personally led his funeral prayer (Janazah).
While walking to the burial ground, Umar (RA) noticed that the Prophet (ﷺ) was walking heavily on his tiptoes, squeezing through as if navigating a dense, tightly packed crowd.
Umar (RA) asked in wonder, “O Messenger of Allah, the people have cleared a wide path for you. Why are you walking like this?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“O Umar! Thousands of angels have descended to attend Tha’labah’s funeral. There are so many that I cannot find enough space to place my entire feet on the ground.”
Conclusion
Tha’labah (RA) viewed a single, accidental glance as a monumental sin spanning the heavens and the earth. He sought sincere repentance from Allah until he returned to Him entirely pure and forgiven. This historical incident stands as a profound testament to the unparalleled sincerity, fear of God, and pristine character with which the Companions lived and passed away.
