Patience (Sabr) is the very foundation that keeps a person’s faith (Eeman) firm and steady.
Allah says in the Quran:
وَلَنَبْلُونَكُمْ بِشَيْ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنْفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّبِرِينَ
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah: 155
A Muslim’s faith will definitely be tested. Allah tests us through poverty, financial losses, the death of loved ones, illnesses, and damages to crops and businesses. Those who face these hardships with patience are the ones who truly succeed.
If we complain, cry out in despair, or become angry with Allah during hard times, we damage our own faith. Sometimes, even people who do many good deeds fail to stay patient during trials. They might complain saying, “I prayed regularly, gave charity, and performed Hajj, so why did this happen to me?” By doing this, they risk losing the rewards of their good deeds.
To stay strong and think clearly during tough times, a believer must have patience.
Allah says in the Quran:
يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبر والصلوةِ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَ الصبرين
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah: 153
The Danger of Impatience
When we act without patience, we fail to foresee the consequences of our actions. This inevitably leads to mistakes and deep regret. On the other hand, acting with patience gives us the time and clarity to understand the situation better.
A Beautiful Example of Patience
Consider the life of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). A false and painful accusation was made against his pure wife, Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her). Even while carrying the heavy responsibility of Prophethood, the Prophet (ﷺ) had to endure this deep emotional pain.
For thirty long days, the hypocrites and enemies in Madinah spread hurtful rumors about Aisha (RA). Throughout this painful month, she did not despair; she turned only to Allah, complained only to Him, and waited patiently.
On the thirtieth day, Allah revealed verses in the Quran clearing her name and establishing her innocence. He made these verses a part of the Quran to be recited by believers until the end of time. This is a magnificent proof of the great reward that comes with patience.
Allah says in the Quran:
إنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit].”
— Surah Az-Zumar: 10
Understanding Destiny (Qadr)
A believer’s life is a mix of both happy and sad moments. Even though we do not like hardships, they are a part of our destiny (Qadr). The wisest thing a believer can do is learn to live with tolerance and patience. Otherwise, it becomes easy to fall into Satan’s (Shaytan’s) traps.
Shaytan easily misleads those who lack patience. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Patience is from Allah, and haste (hurrying) is from Shaytan.”
Patience is the character of the Prophets, while impatience follows the path of Iblis (Satan).
Human life has a fixed lifespan, and everything happens according to Allah’s decree. Man’s impatience cannot change what Allah has already decided.
In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:
“A servant wishes for a matter to happen in a certain way, and I wish for it to happen in another way. When the matter is completed and you look closely, it happens only as I willed, not as you wished.” SubhanAllah!
Conclusion
Haste, panic, and rushing to finish things blindly bring nothing but trouble to a believer’s life. Sometimes, it can even drive a person to act against Islamic teachings. Rushing brings nothing but regret and sorrow.
People who lack the maturity of patience start complaining the moment a small thing goes against their plans. But complaining cures nothing.
To stand firm on the truth, patience is absolutely essential!
