Allah says in the Quran:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit (Angel Jibreel) descend therein by permission of their the Almighty for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
— Surah Al-Qadr
On the night of Laylat al-Qadr, Angel Jibril (Gabriel) (alaihis salam) descends to earth with a large company of angels. They pray for mercy and forgiveness for all the righteous servants of Allah who are found engaged in His remembrance (dhikr), whether they are standing or sitting in worship.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
“Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and hoping for reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.”
— Sahih Muslim
Blessings of the Night
A highly honorable and precious night is approaching in the last ten days of Ramadan. This night is better than a thousand months. On this night, if a person stands in worship with absolute faith in Allah and hoping for His rewards, their past sins will be forgiven.
On this night, fasting believers are given their rewards in full, those who perform good deeds are forgiven of their sins, and they are granted freedom from the Hellfire.
Supplication (Dua) to be Recited on Laylat al-Qadr:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni
Meaning:
“O Allah, indeed You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
Why this Night was Gifted to Us
The generations (Ummahs) who lived before us had long lifespans, living for five hundred to a thousand years. However, the lifespan granted to us, the final Ummah, is typically only between sixty and seventy years.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that a man from the Banu Israel (Children of Israel) spent a thousand months continuously engaged in the worship of Allah, the companions expressed their concern, saying: “O Messenger of Allah! Our lifespans are short; how can we ever achieve the rewards of someone who worshiped for a thousand months?”
In response to their grief, Allah the Almighty bestowed Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) explained that whoever attains this night and spends it in worship will receive rewards greater than those of a thousand months of worship.
How to Attain Laylat al-Qadr
Therefore, we should not limit our search to just one specific night. As advised by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we must put in intense effort and dedication during the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.
If we engage passionately in acts of worship—such as Quran recitation (Tilawat), Tasbih, Nafl (voluntary) prayers, Dhikr, and sending blessings upon the Prophet (Salawat)—with a deep yearning to catch Laylat al-Qadr, we can attain the magnificent blessings of this night through Allah’s infinite mercy.
Note: If a person successfully attains just one Laylat al-Qadr in its entirety during their 60-year lifespan, they earn the spiritual reward of worshipping Allah for 83 years and 4 months (which equals 1,000 months).
