Allah says in the Quran:
لَّذِیْنَ یَبْخَلُوْنَ وَیَاْمُرُوْنَ النَّاسَ بِالْبُخْلِ وَیَكْتُمُوْنَ مَاۤ اٰتٰىهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهٖ ؕ وَاَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكٰفِرِیْنَ عَذَابًا مُّهِیْنًا
“Those who are stingy and enjoin upon [other] people stinginess and conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty – and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.”
– Surah An-Nisa: 37
Stinginess is a sign of worldly greed. Allah’s treasury is vast; there is no shortage in it. Allah despises stinginess and greed in His servants. Allah blesses and increases the wealth of those who spend generously (in permissible ways) on their families.
Allah says in the Quran:
وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَبْخَلُونَ بِمَا اشْهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا لَهُم بَلْ هُوَ شَرٌّ لَهُمْ سَيُطَوَّقُونَ مَا يَخِلُوا بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيمَةِ
Those who are miserly with what Allah has granted them out of His grace should not think that it is good for them; on the contrary, it is bad for them. Whatever they meanly withhold will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection.
– Surah Al-Imran:180
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “I warn you against stinginess. A community that lived before you was destroyed by stinginess. It commanded them to be misers, and they became misers. It commanded them to commit sins, and they committed sins.”
– Ibn Umar (RA)
Giving generously of food, clothing, and wealth to the poor, the needy, places of worship like mosques and madrasas, travelers, and people both known and unknown, not only increases one’s faith but also earns great rewards.
Prophet Yahya (AS) once asked Satan, “Who is the person you like the most among everyone?” Satan replied, “The one I like the most is the miser. And the one I hate the most is the one who gives in charity.”
When Prophet Yahya (AS) asked for the reason, Satan said, “The miser, because of his stinginess, has left me with nothing to worry about.” That is to say, his miserliness alone is enough to drag him to Hell.
The Prophet (PBUH) has said that a miser and a person who constantly reminds others of the favors he has done for them will not enter Paradise.
The wealth of the greedy and the wealth of the miser will not benefit them. On the contrary, spiritual well-being can only be attained by fulfilling one’s essential needs and offering help to the poor and needy. Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and relieving the sorrow of those suffering are deeds that will endure forever. They are among the greatest virtues and will be the reason for our souls to attain peace and happiness in both worlds.
