Islam is for you to attain peace, and for
others to attain peace through you

Before living beings were created, the entire earth was covered with water. At one particular spot, foam appeared. Over time, it expanded and transformed into land. It is at the exact location where that foam appeared that ‘Ka’batullah’ (the House of Allah) was established.

Allah says in the Quran: وَمِنْ حَيْثُ خَرَجْتَ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۚ وَإِنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ ۗ وَமَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

“So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Prophet], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 149

One of the greatest blessings that Allah Almighty bestows upon a believer in this world is the opportunity to visit and behold His house, the Kaaba. Ka’batullah stands as the place that testifies to one’s true love for Allah.

The Kaaba in Makkah is the very first house of worship built for mankind to worship Allah alone.

Two thousand years before the creation of the first human, Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), the angels (Mala’ikah) established Ka’batullah at this site and worshipped the Lord. Afterward, Prophet Adam (pbuh) built it.

Thirdly, it was constructed by his son, Sheeth (Seth – pbuh). Later, when Ka’batullah was damaged during the great flood in the time of Prophet Nuh (Noah – pbuh), Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham – pbuh), with the assistance of his son, rebuilt its foundations.

Fourthly, it was rebuilt by the tribe of Amalika, and fifthly, by the tribe of Jurhum. The seventh reconstruction was carried out by Qusayy bin Kilab, the fifth-generation grandfather of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Kaaba is the direction (Qibla) faced by all Muslims worldwide during their prayers. It serves as a beautiful symbol of unity among global Muslims.

No matter where a Muslim is on Earth, they must face the Kaaba during prayer. The sanctuary surrounding the Kaaba is called ‘Haram Shareef’, which means it is a sacred boundary where forbidden acts are strictly prohibited.

Allah says in the Quran:

إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah) — blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”

— Surah Ali ‘Imran: 96

Hazrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“I asked the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), ‘Which mosque was built first on earth?’ He replied, ‘Al-Masjid al-Haram (Kaaba).’ I asked, ‘Which was next?’ He said, ‘Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.’ I asked, ‘What was the time gap between them?’ He replied, ‘Forty years.'”

— Bukhari

Over time, the Kaaba built by the first human, Prophet Adam (pbuh), fell into ruin, becoming dilapidated and overgrown with plants and vegetation. Several thousand years later, when Prophet Ismail (Ishmael – pbuh) reached his youth, Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) to reconstruct the Kaaba. Both of them raised the foundations of the Kaaba together and called people toward it. It is that very call which is performed today as the pilgrimage of ‘Hajj’.

Allah says regarding this in the Quran:

وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

“And [mention] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ismail, [saying], ‘Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'”

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 127

Allah further says in the Quran:

فِيهِ آيَاتٌ بَيِّاتٌ مَّقَامُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ۖ وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا

“In it are clear signs and the standing-place of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim). And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find thereto a way.”

— Surah Ali ‘Imran: 97

Allah records the supplication made by Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) after building the Kaaba:

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ مَنْ آمَنَ مِنْهُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ

“And [remember] when Ibrahim said, ‘My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits — whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day'”

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 126

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) stood up and said, ‘Allah made Makkah a sanctuary on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it is a sanctuary by Allah’s decree until the Day of Resurrection. Fighting in it was not made lawful for anyone before me, and it was made lawful for me for only a brief period of a day. Its game must not be chased, its trees must not be cut, its fresh herbage must not be plucked, and its dropped finds must not be picked up except by one who makes a public announcement of it.'”

Allah says in the Quran:

“And [remember] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Ibrahim a place of prayer. And We charged Ibrahim and Ismail, [saying], ‘Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for devotion and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].'”

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 125

Special Virtues of the Kaaba

The Kaaba possesses numerous unique virtues. Offering a single prayer in Masjid al-Haram yields the reward of 100,000 prayers.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (ra) narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said:

“One hundred and twenty (120) mercies (Rahmah) of Allah descend upon this House daily: sixty for those performing Tawaf (circumambulation), forty for those praying there, and twenty for those who merely look at the Kaaba.”

Allah has warned of a severe punishment for those who commit sins in the holy city of Makkah. Committing a single sin within the boundaries of Haram Shareef is equivalent to ten sins elsewhere.

The Prophet (pbuh) prohibited praying during certain specific times (such as when the sun is rising, when it is at its zenith, and when it begins to set). However, this restriction does not apply to the Kaaba. One can pray and perform acts of worship there at any hour.

The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“O family of Abdu Manaf! Do not prevent anyone from circumambulating this House or praying here at any hour they wish, whether by night or by day.”

— Tirmidhi

The Structure of the Kaaba

The Kaaba measures 12.86 meters (42 feet 2 inches) in length on its eastern and western sides, 11.03 meters (36 feet 2 inches) in width on its northern and southern sides, and stands at a height of 13.1 meters (43 feet 0 inches).

Its four corners are known by four distinct names:

  • Southeast Corner: Rukn al-Hind (The Indian Corner)
  • Northeast Corner: Rukn al-Iraqi (The Iraqi Corner)
  • Northwest Corner: Rukn al-Shami (The Levantine/Syrian Corner)
  • Southwest Corner: Rukn al-Yamani (The Yemeni Corner)

Seventy angels are stationed at Rukn al-Yamani, saying ‘Ameen’ to the supplications of those who pray there.

— Ibn Majah

Hajr al-Aswad (The Black Stone)

The Hajr al-Aswad is embedded in the southeastern corner of the Kaaba (within the silver casing at Rukn al-Hind). Whoever touches and kisses the Black Stone with true faith (Eeman), their sins will be forgiven. This stone originated from Paradise. When it first descended, it was whiter than milk, but the sins of mankind turned it black.

— Tirmidhi

The Kaaba does not have any windows. Its entrance consists of doors situated two meters above the ground level, which require a silver mobile staircase to enter. Both doors are made of pure gold, and the curtain covering this entrance measures 7.5 by 4 meters. Today, the mosque features nine minarets, each 89 meters high, and 95 entry gates.

The Hateem (Hijr Ismail)

Opposite the Rukn al-Iraqi and Rukn al-Shami corners stands a ‘C’-shaped semi-circular wall, 1.32 meters high, known as the Hateem or Hijr Ismail. This is precisely where Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) left Mother Hajira (Hagar) and her son Ismail (pbuh). Anyone wishing to experience praying inside the Kaaba can pray within this area.

Originally, this space was part of the Kaaba’s interior. When the Quraish rebuilt it, a lack of funds forced them to reduce the width by six and a half cubits. To indicate that this excluded portion belongs to the Kaaba, they built this small semi-circular boundary wall.

Directly above the Hateem, a golden water spout called ‘Meezab-ur-Rahmah’ (The Rain Outlet of Mercy) is fitted onto the roof to drain rainwater. Supplications made directly beneath it are accepted.

Names of the Kaaba in the Quran

Allah Almighty has referred to Ka’batullah by several names in the Holy Quran:

  • Al-Ka’bah

— Surah Al-Ma’idah: 97

  • Al-Bayt

— Surah Ali ‘Imran: 96

  • Baytullah

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 125

  • Al-Bayt al-Haram

— Surah Al-Ma’idah: 97

  • Al-Bayt al-Ateeq

— Surah Al-Hajj: 29

  • Qiblah

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 144

The black cloth draped over the Kaaba is called the ‘Kiswah’.

While Islam emphasizes starting every righteous deed from the right side, it commands the highly sacred act of Tawaf (circumambulation) to be performed in a counter-clockwise (leftward) direction. This aligns humanity perfectly with the laws of the universe—where the moon orbits the earth, the earth and moon orbit the sun, planets revolve around the sun, and even the body’s blood circulation and atomic electrons spin counter-clockwise—harmonizing the believer with the entire cosmos.

Except during congregational prayers, humans continuously circumambulate the Kaaba day and night. Even during prayer times, the angels continue to perform Tawaf above it.

Safa, Marwa, and Zamzam

Allah says in the Quran:

 إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah: 158

The hills located opposite the Kaaba are named Safa and Marwa. The space between them is where Mother Hajira ran in desperate search of water for her infant child Ismail (pbuh). During Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims recreate this devotion by walking back and forth between them seven times, an act of worship known as ‘Sa’ee’.

Near Maqam Ibrahim lies the Zamzam well. It is now situated beneath the floor to allow more space for pilgrims to perform Tawaf directly above it. Zamzam is a miraculous, perennial spring that gushed forth beneath the feet of the infant Prophet Ismail (pbuh) when he cried out in hunger and thirst. It will continue to flow until the Day of Judgment. Whatever noble intention (Niyyah) one makes before drinking Zamzam water will be fulfilled.

The Prophet’s Love for Makkah

The Prophet (pbuh) held immense love for Makkah and deeply wished to spend his entire life there. However, he was forced to migrate (Hijrah). At the moment of leaving, while seated on his camel named ‘Qaswa’, he looked back at Makkah and said:

“By Allah, you are the best of Allah’s earth and the most beloved of Allah’s earth to Allah. Had I not been driven out from you, I would never have left.”
